Dad is continuing to fight for his life.  He is still extremely sick and faces quite an uphill battle.  We learned last night that the critical issue we are now facing is his liver function.  We knew his liver and kidneys were behind prior to surgery, but did not fully understand the condition of his liver.  It is now very clear that the events of the past few weeks have taken a significant toll on his liver function and it has not yet rebounded, but rather progressively gotten worse.  There is no treatment they can do to restore liver function from what I understand, so they are continuing to do everything they can to put him in the best position to recover.  He is receiving blood products quite frequently.  Initially I thought it was related to blood loss, but it is aimed at getting his platelet counts amongst other things in order.

While they continue working to get his fluids dialed in and medications weaned they are working to get him off the breathing tube once again.  This may still be several days out.  Then it will be on to the difficult work of restoring his muscular function.  He has been lying flat for over two weeks now with only a short break.  He is extremely weak, and physical therapy promises to be challenging.  I am certain dad would welcome that challenge.  We will be extremely thankful if we can reach that point, and we will stand shoulder to shoulder with him helping him get stronger.
